The Chateau Tongariro is a large, elegant hotel in Whakapapa village and whilst it’s grand exterior doesn’t necessarily blend with the landscape it has a heritage that makes it almost as much part of the park as the mountains themselves. Opened in 1929 it has ever since been a popular resting place for those visiting the area, with a variety of comfortable and well equipped rooms. The rooms vary in size and aspect but each has a cosy, traditional décor with king or queen bed, tea and coffee making facilities and complimentary WiFi. There are several options for eating, with two restaurants, two cafés and a lounge bar, offering between them a good selection of à la carte cuisine and casual light meals. The Chateau has a gym, indoor pool and sauna, and a full-service spa to help ease those aches after a full day of walking.
