This small group tour is a fantastic opportunity to learn about the local Maori Tuhourangi tribe; both their traditional customs as well as modern day lifestyle. In the company of a knowledgeable guide you will visit the site of the pink and white terraces, once referred to as the eighth wonder of the world, and learn about the enormous eruption of Mount Tarawera in 1886 that destroyed them and the tribal communities that lived nearby. You will visit the fascinating archaeological site of the buried village Te Wairoa and stop at nearby viewpoints to gain an appreciation of how the eruption changed the landscape, reshaping the now thriving and beautiful Lake Tarawera and nearby Blue and Green Lakes. The whole tour takes around four hours.
