Whilst much of the activity in this area revolves around the Tongariro Crossing there are also many options for gentler walks if the crossing is too challenging or, of course, if the weather is inclement. There are some lower levels trails around the base of the mountains, in particular from Ohakune and Whakapapa, including short walks to Tawhai and Taranaki Falls. The Department of Conservation Centre in Whakapapa is a great place to start, not only for local information but also for an insight in to the geological and cultural history of the area. Ohakune has a few interesting little shops and welcoming cafés and you can also hire mountain bikes to explore the local cycling trails, everything from gentle riverside and forest paths to more challenging mountain tracks.
