The Taieri Gorge Railway is one of the remaining sections of the Central Otago line which used to run all the way from Dunedin to Cromwell, providing an essential transport and communication link for the small country towns along its route. It is now possible to take a historic journey from Dunedin, across the Taieri plains and on through scenic Taieri Gorge, as far Pukerangi in the Otago heartland. You will pass through several tunnels and over numerous bridges and viaducts, giving you an appreciation of the complex and creative engineering required to build the line. You will also experience the diverse and beautiful scenery of the region, with ample photo opportunities and interesting commentary along the way. The train has comfortable seating with panoramic windows, an open-air viewing platform and a licensed bar and café. The return journey takes around four hours.
