Queenstown is a hub for a whole host of activities so it’s hard to imagine that you will find yourself with too much free time. However, if you would prefer to take a more laid-back approach to your time here then it is also a great place to relax a little. Lake Wakatipu provides a scenic backdrop to the town and there’s a path that runs alongside it in both directions with some splendid viewpoints. You can rent kayaks, stand up paddle boards or pedalos if you want to get out on the water, and there are also gentle scenic cruises which depart from the town’s wharf, including the famous TSS Earnslaw, a traditional Edwardian steamer.
A ride on the Skyline Gondola is a must for the amazing views from the top. There are a number of walking trails on the hillside and the luge track, fun for all ages. At the bottom you’ll find the Kiwi Birdlife Park sanctuary, home to not only Kiwi but a number of other native New Zealand species.
In addition to all of this there are a number of lovely boutique shops and an excellent selection of eating options, and the compact size of Queenstown means you can actually fit quite a lot in to your day at leisure.
