Impressive Huka Falls are created by a canyon on the Waikato River, about 100 metres downstream from Lake Taupo. It is one of New Zealand’s most visited attractions and whilst you can walk along the rivers’ edge to a good vantage point, for a more thrilling option take a 30-minute jet boat ride to the base of the falls. You first travel along the river, lined with sheer cliffs and native bush, at up to speeds of 80 kilometres an hour, swirling and spinning along the way, and pausing to view natural hot pools and the Wairakei Geothermal Power Station. You will then loiter at the base of the falls long enough to feel the spray on your face before returning back down the river. This ride is designed for all ages, but is not for the faint-hearted or indeed those with serious health issues.
