A heli-hike is a unique opportunity to step on to Franz Josef or Fox Glacier and explore the formations of the ice. You start with a short helicopter flight to a flat stretch of the glacier, high above the township, then have around three hours with an experienced guide who will explain the geology, climate and environment of the region. You will wander at a gentle pace, peering in to icy crevices and pausing to enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountain. At the end of the walking tour you will fly back over the spectacular glacier to the helicopter base.
