The main many people visit this area is to journey on to either Milford or Doubtful Sound but if you find yourself with a bit of time either side of this then Te Anau is a lovely town to just kick back a little. The Department of Conservation centre has some interesting information and displays about the area and details of locals walks if you’re feeling energetic. There’s also a flat path along the lake front which can make a pleasant early evening amble.
Alongside current movies the Fiordland Cinema has daily screenings of Ata Whenua, a short movie that showcases the wilderness of Westland National Park. Mostly filmed be helicopter it shows the area from a different perspective and one which is sure to leave you in awe of a beautiful of this part of the world.
